Application Process
Review the following minimum requirements. If you fail to meet any one of these requirements do not apply. Omission of information or misleading information given on an application or during any subsequent interview will constitute a basis for immediate rejection of your application or for immediate discharge should you be hired. All applicants must be licensed by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officer Standards & Education (TCLEOSE) or be eligible for licensing. Applicants already licensed will receive preference.
Minimum Requirements
1. Age: Application for deputy positions must be at least 21 years of age on date of employment or have received an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States after at least two (2) years of active service; applicants for jailer, dispatcher or clerical must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency test.
3. Residency: Must be a resident of the United States.
4. Texas Driver’s License: Must hold a current valid Texas driver’s license.
5. Military: If a veteran, must not have been discharged from any military service under less than honorable discharge.
6. Credit History: Must have good credit; applicants rejected because of their credit history will be so advised.
7. Past Employment: All information given regarding past employment will be thoroughly checked.
8. Testing: Applicants must pass all testing required for the position being sought; the test given may depend on which law office with whom you are applying.
9. TCLEOSE Certification: Applicant must be eligible for licensing by the Texas Commission on
Law Enforcement Officer Standards & Education if not presently licensed for Jailer position.
Must be TCLEOSE licensed and all medical and psychological requirements must be current for
Peace Officer position.
Documents Required with Application
1. Birth Certificate: A certified copy of your birth certificate.
2. Educational Certification: Copies of your high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate as well as an official transcript for any college credits.
3. Military History: If a veteran, a copy of the official record of your military history (Form DD214 or a copy of your discharge certificate)
4. Credit Report: A current credit report from the county in which you live or, if you have resided in that county for less than six months, a credit report form the county in which you previously lived.
5. Proof of current TCLEOSE Peace Officer License
6. Proof of current Medical and Drug Screening as required by TCLEOSE.
7. Proof of current Psychological Exam as required by TCLEOSE.
8. Copy of Driver License
9.Copy of Social Security Card
Selection and Appointment of Deputies
The following shall be the policy of Grimes County Sheriffs Office for the selection and appointment of Peace Officers to the position of deputy sheriff amended as follows and effective beginning July 22, 2002.
A. The Sheriff or his designee shall appoint a review panel, to interview and review selected candidates based on their qualifications, years of experience and appropriate license as required. This will include a completed background investigation on each candidate. The panel may select only those for review that meet and or exceed minimum qualifications creating a list of eligible candidates for review. Priority will be given to those who exceed minimum qualifications.
B. The review panel shall determine and identify those candidates who are best qualified for the posted position and prepare a rooster of such to be forwarded to the Sheriff or his designee. The Sheriff or his designee shall interview each candidate and make the final selection and a conditional offer to employment to the candidate may be made.
C. Each newly appointed Deputy Sheriff will serve a 12 month probation period beginning from the effective date of hire. During this time, the candidate will be evaluated on performance capabilities and expectations. Probationary Employees may be dismissed at any time during the probation per for a less than satisfactory performance standards and not meeting department expectations.
